Requirements for Speed Reading

There are many reasons why you might be interested in speeding up your reading rate. If you are a college student, reading faster will help you work through the multitude of textbooks more efficiently. As an adult, much of our work time is spent reading instructions, contracts and correspondence. Perhaps you are like me, and have a large pile of reading that you would like to complete for the sheer pleasure of it. Whatever your reason for wanting to learn to read faster, there are a few things that you will need to have before any type of speed reading course will work for you.

A desire to improve your reading skills will be an important factor to bring to a speed reading endeavor. It is helpful to define your goals prior to beginning any type of class, so that you have a firm reason for continuing with the course when it becomes difficult or challenging. Once you have determined why you want to learn to read faster, you will be able to keep that goal in sight throughout the time that it takes you to complete your session.

You must also be open to new ideas and approaches to an “old” subject. Many of the techniques taught in a speed reading course may be contrary to what you learned about reading in school. This is because the approach to reading is different with speed reading techniques, and the ultimate goal of what you hope to achieve may be different as well. For example, in school you may have been told to reread passages of text that you did not completely understand the first time through. Most speed reading courses see this as a no-no. You will also not take the time to sound out words, as your elementary school teachers undoubtedly taught you to do. A willingness to alter traditional ideas in favor of a new approach is often a prerequisite in learning speed reading techniques.

Motivation is a key for learning most new skills, and requires you to take your desire a step further so that you can stick with a process over the long term. This characteristic is what will help you to keep up with your new skill when the learning curve becomes more challenging or just plain tedious. Sometimes motivation is likened to self discipline, and is the factor that will help you ride out the learning process until you have mastered the skill that you have undertaken.

Finally, a willingness to practice is critical to the completion of a speed reading course, since reading must be done regularly for you to see improvement in your skill level. It is helpful if you can schedule a period of time every day that can be devoted to the practice of your new ability, because this is the best method to monitor your progress. Most folks who embark on a speed reading course do so because they enjoy reading, making it easier to look forward to the practice time. It is simply a matter of setting aside the appropriate amount of time to do so.

If you have the desire, openness, motivation and practice time to invest in a speed reading course, the results can be quite beneficial to you. Whether you are reading for school, work or pleasure, the ability to read quickly can be a valuable resource indeed.
